Know and enhance your communication style with DiSC
I've just had this interesting discussion on the DiSC model and how do we deal with people falling into different quadrants... DiSC model is all about Dealing With Difficult Behaviour.
This is common in life and in business. The art of managing difficult behaviour would help in building positive and rewarding relationships and create a satisfying work environment.
Dealing with difficult bahaviour is as much about understanding your own behaviour as it is about the person you are working with and requires you to use a range of approaches to achieve the outcomes you are looking for and build, or at least not danage, your relationship with them.
Communication is not a "one size fits all" approach. You need to be prepared to think, be aware of how you feel and be prepared to gve and take to get the outcome you are looking for.
You must be wondering, why you hit it off with some people immediately, while with others it's like oil and water? Well, research shows that are four primary behaviour styles, wach with a distinct and predictable pattern of behaviour. Once you understand the patterns, you basically have the key to unlock your ability to understand yourself and others, and develop a better and a more effective relationship.
DiSC is a model of human behaviour that helps to understand 'why people do what they do'.
The four quadrats as you can see from the model above are:
Dominance: Effective traits - Direct, Confident, Gets results
Ineffective traits - Dictatorial, Demanding, Sarcastic
Influence: Effective traits - People Oriented, Persuasive, Big Picture
Ineffective traits - Talks too much, Lacks focus
Steadiness: Effective traits - Accurate, Detail, Oriented
Ineffective traits - Perfectionist, Critical, Judgemental
Conscientiousness: Effective traits - Listener, Loyal, Consistent
Ineffective traits - Indecisive, Resists change
The true essence of DiSC is learning about the behavioural diversity and emotional intelligence (self awareness?). This helps to learn and adapt to your own behaviour and move from judging those who are different from themseleves to better understanding, valuing and respectib others.
....... Will upload the questionaire in the next post so that you can analyse which quadrant you fall into and also a little of people you have to deal with everyday... works great if you apply it well.
Good luck and see you at the next post!
Happy Blogging!
